    DIY Concrete Countertops: Polishing

    By Tyson Davis | Interior, My Old House | 4 comments | 15 May, 2017 | 0

After getting all the concrete countertops taken out of the forms I had to get some help from a couple friends to get the larger ones moved to where I would polish them. This is done with a wet polisher, so I had to do this outside since there is a lot of water.

Here is my material list for this part of the project

    • Wet Polisher
    • Water Hose
    • Diamond Polishing Pads
    • Hand Diamond Pad
    • Rubber Gloves
    • Vinyl Apron

So I placed my counters out on my front porch because it was the only place I had room. Now for a little while I was worried about having them sit outside for so long and then I realized that no one would steal them first off because they are custom fit to my counters and second because it takes three men to move them!

To help fill some pin holes that I had I made a slurry to rub in the pin holes. You can see the texture on the slabs here.

After slurrying the counters and waiting for the slurry to dry I was finally able to start wet polishing the concrete countertops. This process is very similar to sanding wood, where you start with a lower grit rating which is more corse and moving to a finer and finer grit.

So I started polishing and polishing and polishing, it took a few days to get everything done the cool part is that when you get it all polished up it ends up with a glossy mirror-like finish. As you can see here in the picture below.
